Postdoctoral Associate – Edge ML/AI for Advanced Urban Sensing Platform

Applications are being accepted for a Postdoctoral Researcher to work on machine learning/AI as part of an exciting new urban sensing platform in New York City.

The position is part of work funded by the National Science Foundation in the context of the Reconfigurable Environmental Intelligence Platform (REIP) project, which allow for high resolution, multi-modal environmental data collection from one of the world’s most dense and diverse cities. The successful applicant will be expected to conduct cutting-edge research on edge machine learning/AI, with a strong focus on computer vision and multimodal learning. It is expected that they will hold a PhD in CS, EE, data science or a relevant field; a strong publication record; good communication skills; self-motivation and the ability to work as part of cross-disciplinary teams.

Candidates are expected to have proven experience in one or several of the following:

  • Machine learning/AI

  • Representation learning

  • Edge computing and/or learning

  • Computer vision

  • Multi-modal analysis

  • Motion and tracking

  • Scene analysis and understanding

The following skills are desirable: C++ and Python development, scientific computing, applied statistical analysis, open-source software practices, and familiarity with Linux environments.

The successful candidate will join the New York University (NYU) Tandon School of Engineering’s Visualization and Data Analytics (VIDA) Research Center and the Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP), working as part of a team led by Prof Claudio Silva. The position offers a starting salary of $70K for an initial annual term appointment, with the possibility of renewal for another year. The position is based in New York City and we are looking to start with the new hire as soon as possible. Applications will be accepted up until November 7th 2019.

The REIP team is concerned by the lack of diversity in our field, and would like to strongly encourage applications from women and others from communities traditionally underrepresented in computer science and engineering research.

About the Centers

The NYU Tandon School of Engineering ( is a comprehensive school of education and research in engineering and applied sciences, rooted in a tradition of invention and entrepreneurship and dedicated to furthering technology in service to society. In addition to its main location in Brooklyn, NYU Tandon collaborates with other schools within NYU, one of the country’s foremost private research universities, and is closely connected to engineering programs at NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai. It operates Future Labs focused on start-up businesses in downtown Manhattan and Brooklyn and an award-winning online graduate program.

The Visualization and Data Analytics (VIDA: Research Center at NYU consists of computer scientists who work closely with domain experts to apply the latest advances in computing to problems of critical societal importance, and simultaneously generate hypotheses and methods that new data sources and data types demand. Work is focussed on the areas of Visualization, Imaging and Data Analysis.

The NYU Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP: is an interdisciplinary research center dedicated to the application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in the service of urban communities across the globe. Using New York City as our laboratory and classroom, we strive to develop novel data- and technology-driven solutions for complex urban problems. CUSP’s research and educational initiatives seek to improve city services; optimize decision-making by local governments; create smart urban infrastructures; address challenging urban issues such as crime, environmental pollution and public health issues; and inspire urban citizens to improve their quality of life.
