  • NYU CUSP is currently accepting applications for Smart Cities Postdoctoral Associates, with a tentative start date of September 1, 2020. We seek applicants with a strong record of interdisciplinary work in developing and applying concepts and methods from science, technology, computing, engineering and applied mathematics in the service of urban communities across the globe. Smart Cities Postdoctoral Associates are full-time, non-tenured positions for two years, with annual appointments renewed based on satisfactory performance. The positions will be based at CUSP’s state of the art facility in Brooklyn. A doctoral degree in an applicable field is required.   • Professor Debra Laefer and her co-inventor Dr. Salam Al-Sabah were accepted into the January sprint for high-tech start-ups for their invention, the “Intermeshed Steel Connection”, which uses advanced manufacturing techniques to generate precision cuttings in support of a new way to connect structural steel. The approach avoids welding and minimizes site bolting to provide a faster, easier connection that can also be disassembled for full beam re-use.
  • The GovLab launched their Multi-City Challenge Program! An effort to help cities and their residents collaboratively design solutions to urgent public problems, this initiative will build on the success of The GovLab’s City Challenges program by expanding the program to run in five Mexican cities simultaneously, in order to take advantage of the collective intelligence of a broader network of citizens to solve urban challenges.   • The GovLab also launched the CrowdLaw effort on big health data with AARP. AARP has partnered with The GovLab to use an online platform to capture what AARP members feel are the most urgent issues surrounding the use, or lack thereof, big health data.   • The GovLab recently published the first of a new ongoing series of case studies on Data Collaboratives and Data Stewardship. These case studies intend to provide insights toward leveraging private data for public good in a systematic, sustainable and responsible manner. This first case is titled “Data Collaborative Case Study: Accelerating Medicines Partnership (AMP).”
  • The GovLab, along with several other organizations and individuals, is co-organizing the Data Science for Social Good Workshop within the Web Conference 2020 this April in Taipei, Taiwan. This workshop will review the potential and emerging field of data science for good – as well as how to develop new partnerships for the data age (Data Collaboratives) to unlock both data and data science capabilities.   • Assistant Professor Yury Dvorkin discussed “How electric vehicles could be used to hack the 2020 election” with Quartz. A successful election attack doesn’t need to gain access to voting systems themselves; Professor Dvorkin says plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) and the charging stations that charge their batteries could enable large-scale cyberattacks on urban power grids.
  • Assistant Professor Yury Dvorkin also gave a presentation on “Computing a Strategic Decarbonization Pathway: A Chance-Constrained Equilibrium Problem” (NSF sponsored research) at the Rutger’s Energy Policy Workshop.
  • Congratulations to NYU Tandon PhD student Saeid Rasulkhani, who studied under Assistant Professor Joseph Chow, for successfully defending his dissertation on “Stable Matching Evaluation and Platform Design for Mobility-as-a-Service Markets.” Saeid has started work as a Research and Algorithm Engineer at Scoop Technologies in San Francisco.
  • NYU Tandon MS student Srushti Rath recently completed her Master’s thesis on “Infrastructure Planning for Urban Air Mobility” and is now starting her PhD studies with Assistant Professor Joseph Chow. Congratulations!
  • A team from the Agile Robotics and Perception Lab, directed by Assistant Professor Giuseppe Loianno, will travel to Abu Dhabi for the MBZIRC competition in February. The Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC) is a biennial international robotics competition that aims to inspire future robotics through innovative solutions and technological excellence. Students Kshitij Jindal, Anthony Wang, and Jueun Kwon will work on three challenges and a triathlon type Grand Challenge.
