Meet Our Inaugural ClassAndrea Kanner
As a native New Yorker, Andrea graduated from Queens College with B.S. in Applied Mathematics. During that time, she tutored students in math, and was involved in community service and helping those that were less fortunate. She wanted to continue her education in a way that would blend math with a way to help others. With her interest in the field of transportation engineering, she felt that CUSP was a perfect balance between her math knowledge and interest in improving urban life.
During her time at CUSP, Andrea enhanced her technical skills through coursework, as well as the various research and internship opportunities she undertook. Given her undergraduate career, Andrea chose electives to strengthen her math, programming, and urban knowledge, and the intersection of all three. Andrea’s interest in data analytics led her to an internship at the FDNY’s analytics team. There, she mainly focused on evaluating the relationship between how the response time to a fire predicts how the fire will escalate, in order to improve FDNY operations.
With the growth of data and data analytics, there are many different directions in which Andrea can take her career. She hopes to join a team at a city agency or a private company that uses data analytics to work on urban issues,. As a result, she will be focusing her math and analytics skills to help the citizens of cities.
