Career Opportunities Tenured Associate or Full Professor

NYU’s Center for Urban Science and Progress (CUSP) invites applications for a tenured Associate or Full Professor position in the Center for Urban Science and Progress. We encourage applications from candidates with expertise in urban informatics and its application to technology, infrastructure, environment, or human aspects of cities. Applications from candidates with a successful record of leading large funded research projects that can support multidisciplinary teams are encouraged. A Ph.D. and a scholarly record that warrants appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor are required. While the successful applicant will be expected to anchor their teaching assignments and research projects within CUSP, their academic position will formally reside within an appropriate tenure-granting unit of NYU.

CUSP’s research and education stands at the intersection of two simple but compelling trends – the growing importance of cities and the rapid evolution of data technologies.  Located in the heart of the Brooklyn Tech Triangle – a focus of ongoing investments in science, technology, and economic development – CUSP uses New York City as its laboratory and classroom, acquiring, managing, integrating, and analyzing data derived from city agencies, the private sector, and novel sensing technologies.  Close partnerships with government agencies in the New York City area and the resources of CUSP’s academic, commercial, and national laboratory partners are key assets in these activities.

CUSP has made substantial investments in developing novel capabilities critical to advancing Urban Science.  A state-of- the-art Data Facility securely provides users with diverse and interoperable datasets, as well as tools for their analysis.  The CUSP Urban Observatory is pioneering highly granular, persistent, and synoptic observations from urban vantage points in multiple modalities. The CUSP Quantified Community initiative is creating highly-instrumented urban neighborhoods via an integrated, expandable sensor network and citizen engagement. The SONYC project has developed and is deploying low-cost highly capable acoustic sensors to measure and characterize urban sounds.  And urban mobility and traffic safety are being studied through a suite of interrelated forefront research projects.

CUSP’s one-year MS program in Applied Urban Science and Informatics has a current enrollment of more than eighty quantitatively talented students from a diversity of backgrounds including  the physical, data, and social sciences, as well as engineering.  It leverages New York City as a living lab, and builds upon the strengths of CUSP’s academic and government partnerships to create a unique data-driven educational offering with projects that concretely address current urban challenges.
